Overview of Weekend Events
On May 12-13, 2000, the City of Laguna Beach hosted a Vision Fair Weekend for community members. The weekend was the initial outreach effort aimed at involving community members in the creation of a vision for the future of the City. The weekend included a range of activities and opportunities for community input and dialogue addressing diverse issues including, business, government, housing, transportation, education, and the environment. This report summarizes the results of the weekend.
A panel discussion entitled ?An Evening with Futurists? began the weekend?s events. The panel brought together three guest speakers, -- George Kenney, Frank Hotchkiss and Amy Margerum -- to provide global, regional and local perspectives relevant to Laguna Beach. Together the panelists encouraged Laguna Beach residents to be proactive and plan for their desired future. Three hundred people attended the event, while many more watched via cable television. Details from the panel discussions, particularly the comments of Ms. Margerum, can be found on page 8.
The weekend events continued with the Vision Fair, held at Laguna Beach High School from 8:30am-3:30pm on Saturday, May 13. The Vision Fair offered community members an opportunity to contribute to the creation of a vision for the future of the City by participating in seven interactive vision booths designed to obtain community input and a facilitated vision workshop that included small group discussions. Fair participants could also visit over 90 community booths to learn more about organizations and regional agencies serving Laguna Beach. Free music and food contributed to a very successful event that drew over 1,000 visitors.
There will be several additional outreach efforts and community workshops throughout the coming months to continue identifying elements of the vision.
