On Sunday, August 20, 2017, an organized rally from a group known as “America First,” as well as counter-protestors, took place at Main Beach Park in Laguna Beach. During the rally, the victim, who was peacefully speaking with a group of people, was “sucker-punched” by an unknown suspect. The suspect fled the scene before police officers arrived in the area. The incident was caught on video and published on various media and social media sites.
On Monday, August 21st, the victim contacted the Laguna Beach Police Department and reported that he was physically assaulted during the rally by a counter-protestor. Laguna Beach Police Department Detectives were able to quickly identify the suspect as 20-year-old Richard Losey, of Lancaster, Ohio.
On Tuesday, August 22nd, Losey was arrested without incident in Laguna Beach as he was attempting to obtain a bus pass to Ohio. Detectives believe Losey was trying to flee the state to avoid criminal prosecution. Losey was booked into Orange County Jail with a $50,000 bail for misdemeanor battery with a hate crime enhancement.
