Composting Made Easy: Your Guide to Going Green

Reducing Waste in Your Backyard
Did you know that residential yard waste makes up about 15-30% of what ends up in Orange County landfills? Instead of throwing away leaves, grass, and yard trimmings, you can compost them right in your backyard. This not only reduces waste but also helps conserve water and prevent urban runoff pollution. Planting water-wise gardens is another great way to cut down on waste while promoting sustainable landscaping.

Verified Backyard Composting Program: Application and Compliance Information
The City’s Verified Backyard Composting Program encourages residents to compost yard waste and kitchen scraps to reduce landfill organic waste under California's Senate Bill 1383. Eligible participants can opt out of curbside organics collection and may receive discounts on waste service rates. To qualify, residents must submit an application detailing their composting methods and compliance practices. The City reserves the right to rescind approval if organics are not composted as claimed, request additional photos, and conduct waste audits. Click here to apply.

Compost & Composting Events: Learn About Best Practices
The City of Laguna Beach, in collaboration with CR&R, offers several composting programs to help residents manage organic waste and create valuable organic fertilizer:

  • Free Composting Workshops: Four times a year, the city hosts free composting workshops where residents can learn how to compost at home. Attendees can purchase compost bins and worm bins at discounted rates during the classes.
  • Kids Can Compost Program: This annual program, held locally, educates young gardeners and their parents on composting basics and its benefits for the environment.
  • Free Compost Giveaways: Two annual compost giveaways are held where residents can receive free high-quality, STA Certified bagged compost for their gardening needs. These events are a great opportunity to enhance your garden's soil health and support sustainable landscaping practices. Availability is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Worm Your Way into Vermicomposting
Vermicomposting is the process of using worms to decompose food scraps and other organic materials. It produces a nutrient-rich compost known as worm castings, which can be used to enrich garden soil. Worm bins are available for purchase at discounted rates during city-hosted composting workshops, making it easy for residents to start vermicomposting at home. Learn more about vermicomposting by attending our events or by visiting CalRecycle.

Grasscycling: Mow and Let It Grow!
Grass recycling is an eco-friendly way to maintain your lawn. By leaving grass clippings on your lawn after mowing, they decompose naturally, nourishing your grass and reducing the need for additional fertilizers. It’s a simple practice that saves time, supports lawn health, and benefits the environment.
