An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a residential unit that can be added to a lot with a single-family or multi-family residence. ADUs can be established from converting existing space or as new construction that is either attached to or detached from the primary residence. ADUs are independent units that have their own kitchen, bathroom, living, and entry areas. A Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (JADU) is also a type of residential unit. Among other requirements, a JADU is limited to no more than 500 square feet in size.

ADUs and JADUs are regulated by state law, the Laguna Beach Municipal Code, and the City's certified Local Coastal Program. To assist property owners and design professionals, the City has developed a flowchart that generally summarizes the application review and approval process and also prepared a list of frequently asked questions.

*Note: In September of 2024, Governor Newsom signed three ADU bills (AB 2533, SB 1211, and SB 1077) that will each take effect on January 1, 2025. This webpage remains under construction while the City amends its ADU ordinance.
